When we first spoke, you mentioned that making a difference was easier than you thought it would be. Help me understand. Early on it seemed that the financial power of pharmaceutical companies have over establishment psychiatry and mainstream media would be insurmountable. I thought it was going to be much more difficult for a relatively small group of activists — comprised of mental health professionals, patients and ex-patients and their families, and journalists — to make a dent. But recently — thanks in large part to activist efforts — the director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the U.S. government’s highest ranking mental health official, has made some extraordinary admissions that opens the door to real reform.
